I was never really close to my mother except when I was a little girl. Those special mommy times were few but important to me. It’s funny how the universe brings one full circle and breaks that cycle.
My stepfathers was recently diagnosed with colon cancer and I am now caring for both my stepfather, Donald Jackson and mother, Marilyn Jackson. In this way it has brought me a little closer to her.
I watch her strength at 89 and during this journey I know the power of her love… I too, recently traveled the same path when I lost my soul mate of 20 years to Pancreatic cancer. “For The Love of Life” Now, and just for a while, we are the same, I am my mother. However this is….Donald”s Story!
This first post makes you want to read more, great job!
there are so many people out there grappling with how to care for their aging parents. Sometimes their relationships with their parents are complicated and they have baggage they haven’t yet put away. Often times the cost is financially and emotionally devastating. I am so intrigued about your journey with these love birds – I remember you naming your love birds Donald and Marilyn (years ago when your Love was alive) and how you manage through this new adventure while keeping your faith in love and life and your inspiring sense of humor. Donald and Marilyn have such a zest for life, running around town till the wee hours of the morning in their 80’s and 90’s. They have such a fire, laughter and devotion to each other. I can’t imagine them languishing. You are so special to be their supporting them.
“Now, and just for a while, we are the same, I am my mother.” What a beautiful, moving sentiment, and a powerful realization. It’s so great that you’re sharing your insights during this experience, and hopefully feeling supported along the way. It sounds like you, your mom, and stepfather have so much to gain from this time together. Brings to mind the Bible quote “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.” Sending you healing thoughts. xo
I know your heart Lowry and your prelude is absolutely riveting.
Such wonderful words of inspiration, strength, and love… Looking forward to much more.
“For The Love of Life” Now, and just for a while, we are the same, I am my mother.
Wow, I too was touched by this!
